Annals of Ayurvedic Medicine
GUIDE FOR AUTHORS

Annals of Ayurvedic Medicine (AAM) (An Official Organ of Association of Ayurvedic Physicians of India (AAPI)) invites contribution from authors for its prospective publication in AAM. The contributed material should be related to Ayurveda or other AYUSH health care systems with elements of new reporting, new findings and novel interpretation of old concepts. We accept the articles related to Integrative Medicine and also articles related to P4 medicine relevant to Ayush.    These should be relevant to the aims of Association of Ayurvedic Physicians of India (AAPI). The manuscript should be typed in English in double spacing with wide margins and should be line numbered . Research articles should be divided in Structured Abstract (up to 250 words), Key words , Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion , Conclusion and References.

The journal follows a 'double blind' peer review policy. To ensure this, following should be observed carefully

Cover Letter : Should contain only (1) Title of the paper, the names ,affiliations and  the addresses of all authors, (2) Short title not exceeding 40 letters, (3) Name and the mailing address of the corresponding author to whom correspondence should be sent.

Main Article: Should contain the title , Abstract  , Key words and the main text only. Figures, Tables and graphs should also be included within this file. The main article should not reveal the author name or their affiliation and identity in any way. It should also not contain any other component in the text which may reveal the author's identity.

After the Title of the manuscript there shall be highlights of the manuscript as 3-4 bulleted points . These should be considered as the key message of the manuscript.

Kindly insert the following at the end of the manuscript before references-

1. CRediT author statement (https://www.elsevier.com/en-in/researcher/author/policies-and-guidelines/credit-author-statement). Initials of the author names should be used in making this statement.

2. Acknowledgement

3. Conflict of interest declaration as per  ICMJE (https://www.icmje.org/disclosure-of-interest/). You can get this form downloaded from the link and can submit it as a separate file.

4. Funding sources

5. Use of AI in preparation of the manuscript.

Where authors use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, these technologies should only be used to improve readability and language of the work.

Authors should disclose in their manuscript the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies and a statement will appear in the published work. Declaring the use of these technologies supports transparency and trust between authors, readers, reviewers, editors and contributors and facilitates compliance with the terms of use of the relevant tool or technology.

General Instructions

1. Authors are suggested to refrain from translating fundamental words of Ayurveda in superficial English parallels. Following is a good example how these translations can adversely affect the whole flow of text : Acharya Sushruta has quoted health definition, “Health is the complete state of equilibrium of Dosha (humors), Agni (digestive power), Dhatu (body constituents) and Mala (proper excretion of waste products) along with mental, sensory and spiritual pleasantness’ and happiness of an individual.” In this text we need not to add prefix to Sushruta and we need to understand that Dosha are not humors, Agni is not digestive power, Dhatu are not body constituents and Mala are not merely the excreta and essentially they mean for much more than what can be explained by their near English translations.

2. Annals of Ayurvedic Medicine currently is not able to use diacritical marks in the text. The authors therefore are requested not to use these marks while preparing the text.

3. Annals of Ayurvedic Medicine currently is also not able to use the Hindi/ Sanskrit script written in Devanagari form. In case if any such reference seem highly important in adding value to to the article , it may be done by putting it as a  scanned image.

4. While presenting Table, Figure and Graph kindly be careful that these are properly designed and have a proper caption above or below . Such table, graph and figure should be numbered appropriately as Table-1 , Table- 2 etc. and should be referred in the text where they are intended to be read. In designing the table, spacing between the words, italicization of ayurvedic words, proper spellings of Latin names should be given extra care.

5. Kindly be careful for uniformity of spellings of Ayurveda / AYUSH related technical words throughout the text.

6. Use of complete , recent ,  and relevant references is the key of a good manuscript. Kindly avoid references from spurious and unauthenticated sources. Don't use Wikipedia as a reference.

7. While using the photographs or reports of individuals as is done in case reports, kindly be careful for proper blinding on name or face of individual.

8. Any material taken up from other sources should have a permission to use  and should be cited properly.

9. Since AAM is open to international readership and also to non ayurveda readers, authors are suggested to use explanatory language where they are detailing some intricate fundamentals of Ayurveda. An explanatory note may be added at the end of the manuscript for some technical words or some standard glossary may be referred to understand some classical technical words . AAM can publish such glossary at the end of the manuscript to help the readers for a better understanding.

10. Reporting Guidelines - Authors are required to follow the reporting guidelines as are relevant to different kind of study designs described at https://www.equator-network.org/reporting-guidelines/consort/

Adherence to these guidelines is mandatory for submitting the paper.

11. For experimental studies involving animals, approval from an appropriate Animal Ethics Committee is essential. Similarly , for studies involving human subjects, approval from an appropriate Institutional Ethics Committee is essential.

12. All clinical trials are required to be registered in Clinical Trial registry of India of elsewhere where the study was conducted.   Kindly look at  https://ctri.nic.in for more details.

Supplementary files: any file which is required to be added as a supplement

Table should be given a short informative title and should properly be referred in the text, should be numbered and should be presented at the end of the manuscript. Figures (if any)  should be submitted electronically in JPG format or otherwise as requested. Each should also be provided with a figure number, a suitable title, any legends used within the figure and should be properly referred in the text. Photographs submitted should be of good quality.

References:

1.The AMA referencing style should be uniformly used for references. ( https://www.apsu.edu/writingcenter/writing-resources/AMA-Writing-Style.pdf) . References should be cited in the text by Arabic number in superscript after the full stop or after a statement is made in the text for which reference is made. The authors are encouraged to read the manual related to AMA style of referencing before they begin writing their article.

2. If there are two or more references in text they should be separated with a coma without any space.

2. Kindly be reminded for the completeness of the references in all aspects. It should include year of publication, and page no also. If a reference has DOI , this should also be included in reference.

3. Please use only those references which are directly connected to your work. Indirect referencing is discouraged by AAM.

4. Use recent references only unless old references are mandatory to be used.

5. Do not use references from social sites, predatory journals and Wikipedia .

6. While referencing don't use any software like endnote etc.   This creates trouble in final typesetting and formatting of the article.

7. Avoid self citations unless it is felt completely essential.

8. Do not use Dr, Prof, Vd , Pt. as prefixes to references.

Example:

In the document/paper/poster you are writing, materials are cited using superscript numerals. The first reference used in a written document is listed as 1 in the reference list, and a 1 is inserted into the document immediately next to the fact, concept, or quotation being cited. If the same reference is used multiple times in one document, use the same number to refer to it throughout the document.

At the end of the document, include a reference list with full citations to each item. Order citations as they appear in your paper.

You may also use author names in your writing, as long as these mentions are accompanied by numbered citations. For materials with one or two authors, include both names. For materials with 3 or more authors, include the first author's name and then et al.

Example:

Finding treatments for breast cancer is a major goal for scientists.1,2 Some classes of drugs show more promise than others. Gradishar evaluated taxanes as a class.3 Other scientists have investigated individual drugs within this class, including Andre and Zielinski 2 and Joensuu and Gligorov. 4 Mita et al's investigation of cabazitaxel 5 seems to indicate a new role for this class of drugs.

Where do I need to put the reference numbers in text ?

Within the text in AMA Citation Style, references are numbered and the numbers are shown in superscript.

Reference numbers should appear:

  • After the fact, quotation, or idea being cited
  • Outside periods and commas
  • Inside colons and semi-colons

If citing more than one reference at the same point, separate the numbers with commas and no spaces between.

Examples:

  • This drug is used to treat hepatitis. 1
  • Storing latex at high heat may cause degradation, 2,3 but it is difficult to keep materials cool in a desert environment.
  • Some physicians choose to store prescription pads in locked cabinets 4; others keep them in their coats at all times. 5

Standard abbreviations for the journals as are recommended at Index Medicus journal abbreviations: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html should be used in referencing.

Disclosure of Interest

Please add disclosure of interest as per ICMJE Recommendations. Please visit: https://www.icmje.org/disclosure-of-interest/.

Replying to revisions

If revision is invited for your submission, keep is as a chance to maximize the possibility of its publication by replying meticulously to all points raised by editor and reviewers .  Do following to increase your chances-

1. Read all comments care fully , save them in a separate word file. Segregate the running paragraphs into points easy to answer by breaking the paragraph in to sentences.

2. Reply to each point and to each reviewer . There should not be a generic reply stating that the "appropriate changes have been made"

3. Dont forget your revised manuscript to reflect the changes you have made in response to comments. Most reviewers are keen to actually check how the authors have responded to their comments. You can do this by highlighting the text or making the changes in track change mode.

4. While writing the reply to revision letter, don't disclose your identity. This reply will be shared with reviewer and since the journal follows a double blind peer review policy , the author's identity should not be revealed to reviewers and vice versa.
