5 EDITORIAL POLICIES

5.1 General Principles

Manuscripts that have not been published before or under evaluation by other publications are accepted for evaluation by the journal, if approved by each of the author.

For quoted texts, tabulated data and graphics from published papers, author has to obtain permission from the author(s) or the owner of the publishing rights of the source article and indicate the permission in the paper.

The manuscripts considered for publication are subject to double-blind peer review.

Changing the name of an author (omission, addition or order) in papers submitted to the journal requires permission of all declared authors. Refused manuscripts and graphics are not returned to the author.

Editor-in-chief is responsible for the content and overall quality of the journal. He evaluates manuscripts for their scientific content without regard to ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, religious belief or political philosophy of the authors. He provides a fair double-blind peer review of the submitted articles for publication and ensures that all the information related to submitted manuscripts is kept as confidential before publishing. He publishes errata pages or corrections when needed.

Editor-in-Chief does not allow any conflicts of interest between the authors, editors and reviewers.

5.2 Authorship and Author’s Responsibilities

Individuals named as authors in a manuscript should meet all of the following criteria recommended by ICMJE

1. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work;

2. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content;

3. Final approval of the version to be published;

4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Individuals who do not meet all the criteria above or who make contributions in some other aspects, must be listed in the “Acknowledgement” section. For instance, fund raising, data collection or supervision of the research group are not sufficient roles to be accepted as an author; individuals providing technical support, assisting writing, providing material are examples to be indicated in acknowledgement section. No one, other than the ones listed as authors should have contributed to manuscript; ghost writing is not acceptable. The Author Form, indicating the authors’ contribution to the manuscript should be sent together with the article. The order of names in the author list of an article should be a co-decision. In case of a need to make changes in the authorship of a manuscript or a published article, the changes are implemented according to COPE guidelines

It is authors’ responsibility to ensure that the manuscript is in accordance with scientific and ethical standards and rules. And authors should ensure that submitted work is original. They must certify that the manuscript has not previously been published elsewhere or is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere, in any language. Applicable copyright laws and conventions must be followed. Copyright material (e.g. tables, figures or extensive quotations) must be reproduced only with appropriate permission and acknowledgement. Any work or words of other authors, contributors, or sources should be appropriately credited and referenced.

All authors must disclose all issues concerning financial relationship, conflict of interest, and competing interest that may potentially influence the results of the research or scientific judgment. All financial contributions, supports or sponsorship of projects must be clearly explained.

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published article, it is the author’s obligation to promptly cooperate with the Editor-in-Chief to provide retractions or corrections of mistakes.

5.3 Peer-Review Process

Dusunen Adam The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences utilizes a double-blind peer review process where both the identities of reviewers and authors are anonymous. The editor-in-chief is responsible of the editorial and scientific content of the journal and makes the final decision.

Submitted manuscripts that pass preliminary control are evaluated by editor-in-chief for their originality, methodology, the importance of the subject covered and compliance with the journal scope. For the manuscripts that are considered for publication an unbiased, double-blinded peer-review process is initiated by associate editors. The manuscripts are sent to two or more independent peer reviewers who are expert in the field. The reviewers are asked to provide detailed, constructive comments that will help the editor to make a decision, and the authors to improve their manuscript. The requested changes are made by the authors using the online manuscript submission system. Associate editor sends the original manuscript, the revised manuscript and all the reviewers’ comments together with his recommendation to the editor-in-chief.

Editor-in-chief reviews the manuscript and makes the final decision. He might accept the manuscript, reject the manuscript or request further revisions.

In case of manuscripts submitted by editors or by the editorial board members of the journal, the editorial board will invite an external and independent editor to manage the evaluation processes of these manuscripts. Reviewers are required to evaluate manuscripts based on content without regard to ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, religious belief or political philosophy of the authors. The reviewers are required to notify the editor of any kinds of conflicts of interest with respect to the research, the authors and/or the research funders. They must ensure that all the information related to submitted manuscripts is kept as confidential and must report to the Editor-in-Chief if they are aware of copyright infringement and plagiarism on the author’s side.

Dusunen Adam The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences takes into consideration the COPE guidelines and flow charts for peer review process.

All submissions must be original, unpublished (including as full text in conference proceedings), and not being under the review of any other publication synchronously. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two blinded reviewers. The journal editors reserve the right to use plagiarism detecting software to screen submitted papers at all times. Plagiarism and fraudulent data; falsification (fabrication or manipulation of research data, tables, or images) and improper use of humans or animals in research are ethical breaches and manuscripts not in accordance with publication ethics standards will be removed from the publication. This also contains any possible malpractice that revealed after the publication.

The journal follows the COPE Ethics Flowcharts for dealing with cases of possible scientific misconduct and breach of publication ethics

5.4.1 Conflict of Interest

Dusunen Adam The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences requires authors and individuals taking part in evaluation process of a manuscript to disclose any existing or potential conflict of interest that could unduly influence (or be reasonably seen to do so) one’s responsibilities in the process. The types of competing interests that should be declared include financial ties, academic commitments, personal relationships, institutional affiliations. To disclose potential conflicts of interest, the ICMJE Potential Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form should be filled in and submitted by all contributing authors. Cases of a potential conflict of interest of the editors, authors, or reviewers are resolved by the journal’s Editorial Board within the scope of COPE Conflict of Interest Flowchartsand ICMJE Conflict of Interest guidelines

Approval of research protocols by the ethics committee in accordance with WMA Declaration of Helsinki mentioned above is required for experimental, clinical, and drug studies and for some case reports. If required, ethics committee reports or an equivalent official document must be provided by the authors.

For animal studies, it should be ensured that the welfare of animals used for research is respected and the measures taken to prevent pain and suffering of the animals is stated clearly.

5.4.3 Ethics Committee Approval and Informed Consent

6.2.6 Tables, Graphics and Figures

Tables, graphics and figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals in the text. The places of them should be signed in the text. Detailed information is under the related heading in below.

6.3 Manuscript Types

6.3.1 Research Article

Research articles report substantial and original scientific results within the journal scope. Research articles comprised of abstract, keywords, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, references and table/figures. The abstract and body text must be structured as explained above. Ethics committee approval and informed consent must be obtained and indicated in research articles.

6.3.2 Brief Report

Brief reports are similar to research articles in that they follow the same format and guidelines, but they consider small-scale research or research that is in early stages of development. These may include preliminary studies that have a simple research design or a small sample size and that have produced limited pilot data and initial findings that indicate need for further investigation.

6.3.3 Case Report

Case reports consider new, interesting and intriguing case studies in detail. They should be unique and present methods to overcome any health challenge by use of novel tools and techniques and provide a learning source for the readers. Case reports comprise of: abstract (unstructured), keywords, introduction, case report, discussion, reference, tables and figures. Case reports must be of 1500 words at maximum and have few figures, tables and references. Written informed consent of the patient should be obtained and indicated in the manuscript.

6.3.4 Guest Editorial

Guest Editorials in the form of review articles are written by individuals who have done substantial work on the subject or are considered experts in the field. The Journal invites authors to write articles describing, evaluating and discussing the current level of knowledge regarding a specific subject in the clinical practice. The articles submitted other than these are not accepted for this category. The manuscript should have an unstructured abstract representing an accurate summary of the article, keywords, introduction and conclusion.

6.3.5 Letter to the Editor

Letters to editors will only be evaluated if the letter is consisting of 500 words maximum, with no table or figure and posted with the note “for publication”. Letter should be signed by all authors. Only those critics/comment letters that are sent no later than 3 months after the publication of a relevant paper are accepted.

6.4 Standards for Tables, Graphics and Figures

Tables capture information concisely and display it efficiently; they also provide information at any desired level of detail and precision. Including data in tables rather than text frequently makes it possible to reduce the length of the text. Tables, graphics and figures should be numbered with Arabic numbers in the order of their place within the text and indicated in the body text accordingly.

Line spacing for tables is double space with maximum allowable length of 120 characters and 70 lines. Each table is to be placed in a separate page with separate title. A short or an abbreviated heading should be given to each column/line. Authors should place explanatory material in footnotes, not in the heading. All nonstandard abbreviations should be explained in footnotes. The statistical measures of variations, such as standard deviation and standard error of the mean should be identified.

When the author(s) has used a picture, figure or table from another source, permission from the copyright owner must be obtained, the necessary printing permission document must be provided and the source referred to in the text. Legends must be submitted for all figures. Figure legends should be brief and specific. Figure legends should be listed on a separate page at the end of the manuscript text.

All electronic art can be submitted through the online manuscript submission system. Figures should be submitted as separate digital file. Electronic art should be created/scanned and saved and submitted as a JPEG file. Electronic photographs, radiographs, CT scans, and scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

6.5 Note for Measurements and Abbreviations

Measurements of length, height, weight, and volume should be reported in metric units (meter, kilogram, or liter) or their decimal multiples. Temperatures should be in degrees Celsius; blood pressures should be in millimeters of mercury.

It is required to use only standard abbreviations; use of nonstandard abbreviations can be confusing to readers. Authors should avoid abbreviations in the title of the manuscript. The spelled-out abbreviation followed by the abbreviation in parenthesis should be used on first mention unless the abbreviation is a standard unit of measurement.

6.6 References

References should be numbered in parenthesis and listed in the order of being referred in the body text. There should be no inconsistency between the order of numbering and the order of reference list. It is solely the authors’ responsibility to ensure the accuracy of references. Below given examples should be considered in citing the references. All authors are cited in full name. Abbreviation of journal names should be in compliance with Medline/PubMed. Journals that are not indexed by Medline/PubMed should be given in full name. Abbreviations of the journals in Medline/PubMed can be found in http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog Dusunen Adam The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences recommends the use of Mendeley which is a reference manager and academic social network. Mendeley enables the researcher to prepare the references list using the required style automatically; to share, read, cite and annotate the article. It provides online access to the previous documents used by the researcher; enables the researcher to read the documents on smart phones and tablets, to connect and collaborate with scientific researchers. It organizes the articles in the researcher’s computer; and recommends similar articles in the research area. For more information on Mendeley you can visit: https://www.mendeley.com/
