GUIDE FOR AUTHORS
International Journal of Surgery and Medicine (Int J Surg Med) is open access,monthly, the international single-blinded peer-reviewed medical journal that publishes original research, reviews, clinical studies, meta-analysis, case series, editorial and short communications on all aspects of surgery and medicine. If you wish to submit a case report, you may do it also on the International Journal of Medical Reviews and Case Reports http://mdpub.net/.
The authors may send their manuscripts in English.
Authors are strongly encouraged to review the entire “Instructions for Authors” before submitting a manuscript to the International Journal of Surgery and Medicine, to ensure that the manuscript is properly prepared and formatted. If the manuscript is not prepared according to the “Instructions for Authors”, it will be returned to the authors for revision before being sent for editorial review.
The following instructions follow the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly work in Medical Journals).
All submissions must be made by the corresponding author only.
Inquiries about the status of submitted manuscripts or queries about the accepted manuscripts may be sent to the Editorial Office using the "Contact Us" page. All queries will get a response at the earliest.
The journal accepts articles based only on scientific validity and methodological soundness with emphasis on research integrity and high ethical standards. We believe that if research is scientifically valid and technically sound then it deserves to be published for the research community. Articles are not rejected based on any subjective determination of novelty of the study, impact in a given field, or degree of advancement to existing literature.
How to submit Manuscript
Manuscripts can be submitted to Journal by:
Online submission using the 'Submit Article” button on the journal website. As an email with attached files. If the manuscript is sent by email please attach the following files: cover letter, manuscript text file and figures/images.
Types of Manuscripts
The following types of manuscripts are published in the International Journal of Surgery and Medicine: Research Article, Clinical Studies, Rapid Communication, Protocols, Case Series, Review Article, Editorial, Mini review, What would you do?
The Case Series section reports a series of 4-7 similar cases. The cases should address a challenging diagnostic and/or therapeutic problem with possible solutions to help clinicians in managing these cases. The case series must be accompanied by a comprehensive review of the literature.
- Authors: max 10
- Abstract: Structured abstract less than 300 words (Introduction, Case Series, Conclusion) or unstructured abstract less than 300 words following the general pattern of a structured abstract
- Keywords: 3-5
- Structure of manuscript: Introduction, Case Series, Discussion, Conclusion, References: 30 or less
Review articles should have comprehensive coverage of a topic in a clear and lucid language with representative figures and images.
- Authors: max 10
- Abstract: Unstructured abstract less than 300 words
- Keywords: 3-5
- Structure of manuscript: Introduction, Other headings as required by the topic
- References: 100 or less
Organize the manuscript as given below, in order:
- Title Page
- Abstract: 3-5 Keywords
- Manuscript Text
- Conflict of Interest
- Author's Contribution
- Tables/Graphs/Charts/Figure Legends
Start the main text of the manuscript on a page separate from the abstract page. Use a normal, plain font for text (e.g. 12-14 point Times New Roman). Number the pages consecutively, starting from the title page. Do not use abbreviations in the title or abstract.
First name/given name(s) and last name/family name of authors (see Authorship section below)
Author affiliations: department, institution, city, state, country
ORCID number(s) for all authors whenever available
There are two types of abstracts - structured and unstructured. Original research papers require a structured abstract. Both types of abstracts should be no more than 300 words.
Keywords: 3–5 keywords
Corresponding author: Name, physical address, phone, fax, email

Ethics approval and informed consent
Manuscripts reporting studies on human subjects, human data or tissue, or animals should include a statement on ethics approval and consent when humans are involved. Please include the name of the committee that approved the study and reference number if appropriate. Please see our editorial policies for more information.
Consent for publication
In cases where details, images, or videos relating to individual participants are included in the manuscript, authors should have obtained written informed consent to publish the details from the participant or parent/guardian. The authors should add a statement to this effect here. Authors should be able to provide such signed consent if required by the Editor.
Data availability (where applicable)
Please include a statement about where data supporting the results reported in the manuscript can be found and about data sharing including, where applicable, links to the publicly archived datasets. The statement of data availability should explain which additional unpublished data from the study, if any, are available, to whom, and how these can be obtained. In cases where authors do not wish to share their data or are unable to do so, they should state that data will not be shared and the reasons why. Please refer to our editorial policies for further information.
Please declare all the sources of funding including financial support. Please describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in any of the stages from study design to submission of the paper for publication. Please state if the sponsor(s) had no such involvement.
Your relationship with other people or organisations may influence the way you interpret data or present the information your study demonstrated. This is known as a competing interest.
For transparency, authors are required to complete a declaration of competing interests.
The author(s) of a paper submitted to the International Journal of Surgery and Medicine are required to complete a declaration of competing interest for any commercial associations or financial interests held by the author or immediate members of the author's family, which might be construed as posing a conflict of interest, including but not limited to consultancies, employment, expert testimony, honoraria, retainers, stock holdings or options, and membership on boards of for-profit organizations with a financial interest in the paper. All competing interests will be listed in the declarations at the end of the article.

If you are unsure as to whether you or one of your co-authors, has a competing interest please discuss it with the editor.
According to the IMCJE guidelines, authorship credit should be based on:
1. Substantial contributions to conception and design, data acquisition, or data analysis and interpretation;
2. Drafting the article or critically revising it for important intellectual content;
3. Final approval of the version to be published; and
4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
Authors should meet conditions 1, 2, 3, and 4 and appropriate credit for each author’s contribution should be given.
Acquisition of funding, data collection, or general team supervision alone does not constitute authorship.
All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship, and all those who qualify should be listed.
Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content.
Increasingly, authorship of multicenter trials is attributed to a group. All members of the group who are named as authors should fully meet the above criteria for authorship/contributorship.
The group should jointly make decisions about contributors/authors before submitting the manuscript for publication. The contact person should be prepared to explain the presence and order of these individuals. It is not the role of editors to make authorship/contributorship decisions or to arbitrate conflicts related to authorship.
All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in the Acknowledgments section. Examples of those who might be acknowledged include a person who provided purely technical help, writing assistance, or a department chairperson who provided only general support. Authors should declare whether they had assistance with study design, data collection, data analysis, or manuscript preparation. If such assistance was available, the authors should disclose the identity of the individuals who provided this assistance and the entity that supported it in the published article. Financial and material support should also be acknowledged.
Groups of persons who have contributed materially to the paper but whose contributions do not justify authorship may be listed under such headings as “clinical investigators” or “participating investigators,” and their function or contribution should be described—for example, “served as scientific advisors”, “critically reviewed the study proposal”, “collected data”, or “provided and cared for study patients”. Because readers may infer their endorsement of the data and conclusions, these persons must give written permission to be acknowledged.
Authors' information (optional)
Information about the author(s) that may be relevant to the interpretation of the article may be listed here. This may include the authors’ affiliations, qualifications or other relevant background information. This section does not list any competing interests.
The authors of the manuscript are responsible for the accuracy of references.
All references in text, tables, and legends must be identified by consecutive Arabic numerals in square brackets, listed immediately before the closing punctuation mark. E.g.  or [1, 2] or [1-4] or [1-4, 6] or [1, 2, 5-7] or [1, 4-5, 8, 11-16]
Any reference that is cited only in the tables or figure legends should be numbered according to the first identification of the table or figure in the main text in continuation with the sequence of citation numbering.
For example: If the last reference cited before the first citation of Figure 1 is reference , and the Figure 1 legend contains a reference cited only in the Figure 1 legend, that reference should be numbered as , and the next reference cited in the main text would be .
In the 'Reference' section, number each reference consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text (not in alphabetic order).
References should not be used in titles or headings.
List all authors up to 6; if more than 6, list the first 6 followed by 'et al.
Avoid using abstracts as references.
Avoid citing unpublished data or manuscripts, personal communications, websites, conference papers and non-peer-reviewed publications.
Avoid citing textbooks as references and very old references.
Please take extreme care in following the reference style given below. Manuscripts with references not formatted in the correct style will be returned to the authors for revision before being sent for Editorial Review.
References must follow the general arrangement and punctuation outlined in the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Ann Intern Med, 1988;108:258-265 or Br Med J. 1988;296:401-405.References should be typed, double-spaced, after the acknowledgements. Provide inclusive page numbers for all references.
The general format of the references is: Author Surname followed by Initials. Article title. Abbreviated journal name year; volume(number): inclusive page numbers. No space between - year;volume(number):inclusive page numbers.
Tables and Figures
Tables should be provided after references and before the graphs/charts. Please follow the following order when preparing the manuscript: Tables, Graphs/Charts, Figures. The table numbers should be cited at the relevant places in the text in parenthesis after the punctuation mark. E.g. (Table 1) or (Tables 1-4) or (Tables 1, 4, 6-8). Each table should be numbered in the order of the first citation in the text, using Arabic numerals, e. g. Table 1. Tables and figures captions.
Article Processing Charges
All work published in the International Journal of Surgery and Medicine is open access, published and distributed under Creative Commons Attribution International License.
Open access publishing allows unrestricted use, distribution and reproduction of an article in any medium, provided that the original work is properly cited and due credit is given to authors and original publisher.
Full-text of all articles published in the International Journal of Surgery and Medicine is available online, worldwide, free of charge, immediately on publication. Readers can view, download, print, and redistribute any article without a subscription, enabling much greater distribution of an author's work. This translates into an increased impact on the authors published work.
In an open-access model, authors contribute towards the processing costs of an article. Processing charges can be paid from an author's research budget or by their supporting institution.
The Article Processing Charges (APC) will be billed to the corresponding author upon acceptance of the article. There is no fee for the submission of the article. Authors are required to pay standard Article Processing Charges as mentioned below:
1 accepted original article = 180 EUR (The publication will be ready up to 10 days after acceptance.)
1 accepted review article = 140 EUR (The publication will be ready up to 10 days after acceptance.)
1 accepted case report = 90 EUR (The publication will be ready up to 10 days after acceptance.)
Fast-track service = 30 EUR (The publication will be ready up to 3 days after acceptance.)
Fast-track review = 50 EUR (Time from submission to first decision = 3 days.)
The payment can be made by Credit/Debit Card, Bank or PayPal. We have bank accounts in EUR, USD, TRY, GBP, AUD, RON. The details about how to make the payment will be sent to you after the manuscript has been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication.
Page proof of the manuscript, a form for marking corrections of the proof and instructions for filling the form will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail, before the publication of the manuscript. Authors should type the proof corrections in the form and send it to the Editorial Office.
While checking the proof, take note that the text is complete and all figures and tables are included in the proof. Respond to all queries from the Editorial Office, check the proof for changes like spellings, punctuation and setting of text, tables, figures and figure legends. Do not make any substantial changes to the text or change figures or tables or their legends. If substantial changes need to be made please contact the Editorial Office.
Corrected proof must be returned to the Editorial office within 72 hrs (3 days) of receipt.
